In 1998 while in Kenya volunteer teaching we decided
that we wanted a new start for the new Millenium. A new start in a
new century in a new country. We'd had a great life in Australia but it
was time for change. (As if Kenya wasnt a big enough change!)
Although I was born in New Zealand I had spent most of my adult life in
Australia. My wife Karen (an Australian) had been on holiday with me to
New Zealand a number of times. We had been looking for that special place
and always stopped in Kaikoura. Kaikoura is a small coastal town nestled
between the mountains and the sea, there is something very different about
the light and the air. There is no other place like it. We heard that
a very unique piece of land was coming available at the beginning of 2000.
We were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time after
years of looking. We had looked at other properties around the district
before, but this was the one.
A one in a million opportunity!

In January 2000 we started to build the gallery.
We lived above the gallery for 2 years while we designed and built
the B&B.

|
In 2002 we finished the house, moved in and
opened the B&B.
The upstairs of the gallery now became Karen's studio.

Karen now takes 4 art classes a week and conducts
2 or 3 day workshops during the year. As well as painting for the
gallery she accepts commissions.

Homewood Hill is a very special place and we are very fortunate to
be able to share our good fortune with others. Come, see for yourself,
be inspired, whether to stay, visit the gallery or take a workshop you
are most welcome. Bob & Karen
